The Books of Summer

Book 4: This week I decided to finish up a book I started over a year ago. I took a book arts work shop in Ft. Worth at the 2013 NAEA Convention. The class was taught by Lauren Kolesar- Eatinger on the campus of TCU case bound books We completed one book in class and began a second. I had every intention of finishing when I returned to Houston. Well, here they are.

Book 3:  This week’s book is a flag book created using quotes found on the teabags of Yogi Tea.  I’ve been saving the tags from these tea bags intending to do something with them.  I used a couple of the quotes on journal pages.  I saw a flag book made using fortunes from fortune cookies and was inspired to use the tea bag quotes.  The outside and inside covers also contain part of the box.  The beautiful designs shown are on the inside of the box that the tea bags come in.

The Books of Summer

Summer officially began June 5th at 1:00. This is the first summer in three years that I have not been going to school myself. Last summer I was in the process of working on my alternative certification to be able to teach in a public school. The two previous years I was working on my Masters in Art Education. I am challenging myself to complete a handmade book every week of summer. I’ve spent too much time looking at ideas for books on Pinterest, and looking at books and videos about how to make books. It was time to start making something so here goes!

Book 1: This Twig Spine Pamphlet Stitch book was presented at the June meeting of the Houston Book Arts Guild. Missy Bosch led the group in the assembly process. A multitude of possibilities were offered for making this book. I chose to have a small flap on the cover with a small brad for a fastener.
